Understanding Addition

Addition is how we combine numbers to find a total. If you have 5 pencils and your friend gives you 3 more, you can add them to find the total: 5 + 3 = 8!

When you add numbers, it doesn’t matter the order. 5 + 3 is the same as 3 + 5!

Understanding Subtraction

Subtraction helps you find out how much is left when something is taken away. For example, if you start with 10 marbles and give 4 to a friend, you subtract to find out how many marbles you still have: 10 - 4 = 6.

Subtraction is the opposite of addition. If you know 6 + 4 = 10, then you also know 10 - 4 = 6!

Understanding Multiplication

Multiplication helps you find the total of equal groups quickly. Instead of adding the same number over and over, you can multiply! For example, 5 x 6 means adding 5 six times: 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 30.

Memorize your times tables, it makes solving problems faster and easier!

Understanding Division

Division helps you split a number into equal parts. For example, if you have 20 candies and want to share them equally among 5 friends, you use division: 20 ÷ 5 = 4. Each friend gets 4 candies!

Division is the opposite of multiplication. If you know 5 x 4 = 20, then you know 20 ÷ 5 = 4!
