Buhurt is a full-contact medieval armored combat sport that blends historical authenticity with modern athleticism.
Originating from the Old French word béhourd, meaning “to wallop,” buhurt recreates medieval tournaments using blunted steel weapons and historically accurate armor. Unlike reenactments, buhurt is a competitive sport where fighters engage in duels or team melees, aiming to strike or bring down opponents while adhering to strict safety rules. Participants train rigorously to build strength, technique, and endurance, and their gear—swords, axes, halberds—is inspected before each match to ensure safety and fairness.

The Cincinnati Barbarians are Ohio’s premier armored combat team, known for full-contact medieval fighting with real steel weapons and authentic armor.
Founded in 2019 and based in Centerville, Ohio, the Cincinnati Barbarians combine athleticism, history, and community. They compete in Historical Medieval Battles (HMB), a sport where fighters engage in team melees and one-on-one duels using blunted steel weapons like swords, axes, and polearms. The team also runs the Barbarian Academy, welcoming members from all walks of life and fostering a supportive, inclusive environment. Their events—such as the Cincinnati Siege and appearances at the Ohio Renaissance Festival—feature thrilling battles, crowd engagement, and opportunities to meet the fighters. Whether performing at local breweries or hosting large-scale tournaments, the Barbarians bring medieval combat to life with grit, camaraderie, and spectacle.
