Addition and Subtraction For 2nd Graders!

Addition is when you put two or more things together to find out how many there are in total. For example, let's say you have three apples and your friend gives you two more apples. How many apples do you have now? To find out, you can count all the apples together. 3 + 2 = 5. So now you have five apples in total.

Subtraction is when you take something away from a group to find out how many are left. For example, let's say you have five cookies and you eat two of them. How many cookies do you have left? To find out, you can start with the total number of cookies you had, which was five, and then take away the two cookies that you ate. 5 - 2 = 3. So you have three cookies left.

Here's another example of addition. Let's say you have two pencils and your friend gives you three more pencils. How many pencils do you have now? To find out, you can count all the pencils together. 2 + 3 = 5. So now you have five pencils in total.

And here's another example of subtraction. Let's say you have eight stickers and you give three stickers to your friend. How many stickers do you have left? To find out, you can start with the total number of stickers you had, which was eight, and then take away the three stickers that you gave to your friend. 8 - 3 = 5. So you have five stickers left.

One more thing to keep in mind is that addition and subtraction can be done in any order. For example, if you have two pencils and you get three more pencils, you can either add the two and three first and then get five pencils, or you can add the three pencils to the two pencils later and still get five pencils.

I hope this helps you understand addition and subtraction better! Remember, math is fun and can be used to solve all sorts of problems in real life.
