The Cincinnati Reds were founded in 1882,when the first official Major League baseball team were introduced into the first league known as the National League(NL). The team's name wasn't always the Cincinnati Reds. In 1869, when the team first began play before the National League was formed, they were known as the Cincinnati Red Stockings. The team received their name from the common name for longer socks back in the 19th century. In 1890, the team changed their name to the Cincinnati Reds, around 64 years later the team chnaged their name to the Cincinnati redlegs due the the communism associattion scrae during the beginning of the cold war with the Soviet Union. In 1950, the team again cahnged their name back to the Cincinnati Reds, which is the team's name today.
Beginning the first season for the Cincinnati Redstockings, the team went 81-0 against Amateur clubs when the organized baseball began in the 19th century. Using data from the recorded history for baseball, this Cincinnati team are the only to go undefeated in the official league for baseball, known as today the MLB(Major League Baseball). The first world Series the Reds won was in 1919, when the Reds defeated the Chicago White Sox in a five game series, 3-2. Unfortunately, this world series was famously discredited by many baseball hisotrians today, known as the Black Sox scandal. The name was given due to the accusations that the Chicago White Sox were taking bribes to throw the World Series by purposely losing. You can view a link to the Black Sox scandal below to see more information about the Scandal. After a 21 year gap, the Reds again won the world seriesd in 1940, defeating the Detroit Tigers 4-3 in a 7 game series. The best World Series victories considered by a majority of Reds fans are the back-to-back victories in 1975 and 1976. In 1975, the Reds defated the Boston Red Sox 4-3, and one fo the most prominent teams in Basaeball history, the New York Yankees, 4-0 the next year. The final World Series title, and mosty recent was in 1990. The Reds team that year swept the "unbeatable" Oakland Athletics considered by many, 4-0 in the World Series. In the currenty century, The reds have been to the playoffs only 3 times, in 2010,2012, and 2013.
